Helping in an emergency begins long before one actually occurs. Training, coordination, and understanding the limits of your role are just as important as a willingness to collaborate. If you live in Spain and are interested in volunteering for Civil Protection, the first step is to gather information through a recognized organization.
Where to inquire to get started
The General Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergencies recommends contacting your local municipal government (ayuntamiento) or regional or national volunteer associations. They also highlight the involvement of the Red Cross and amateur radio operators who volunteer for the REMER network. These are different paths; check which tasks and training are associated with each one.
What to ask before signing up
Request information regarding requirements, initial training, authorized duties, supervision, and the time commitment involved. Also, find out how shifts are organized and what kind of coverage (insurance or otherwise) is provided for the activity. Specific requirements depend on the individual group and the applicable regulations; a general website cannot replace this specific information.
Not all tasks involve responding to a rescue. Depending on what the organization offers, you might get involved in prevention, communications, logistical support, or public awareness activities. Explain your skills and availability to find a realistic way to contribute.
Training is part of the commitment
A first-aid course can be a good starting point, but it does not automatically make someone a rescuer, nor does it authorize them to intervene on their own. Learn from qualified personnel, practice within the organization’s established program, and keep your training up to date.
The story of RescueGR is inspiring due to its emphasis on preparation and teamwork. It is this attitude—rather than their specific procedures, requirements, or competencies in Greece—that can be applied elsewhere.
Helping responsibly
In the event of an emergency, notify the appropriate services and follow their instructions. Do not travel to an area where emergency operations are underway on your own initiative, and do not share personal information or images of affected individuals. Effective aid is coordinated.
A first step this week
Look for official information from your local municipal government and make a list of questions regarding training and time commitment. You can attend an information session before making a commitment. The best kind of volunteering is one that you can sustain through preparation, respect, and consistency.
