Do you want to learn to play a musical instrument but don’t know where to start? Learning music doesn’t have to be difficult or consume all your time. Of course, if you want to master an instrument, you will need to dedicate a significant amount of time to it. However, it is also true that some instruments are easier for beginners, allowing you to play some of your favorite melodies in no time. Let’s take a look at a few.

1. Ukulele

The ukulele is small, affordable, and easy to carry around. With only four strings—which are also gentler on the fingers than guitar strings—learning to play it is very easy and fun. You will soon discover that you can play many songs using simple chords.

2. Harmonica

Small, yet… miraculous! At first glance, it might look like a toy, but in the right hands, it can possess great (melodic) power. Its tiny size means you can take it anywhere. Just try bringing a saxophone along on a hike, and you’ll immediately appreciate the convenience of the harmonica’s size!

3. Guitar

Especially popular among beginners. You can start with an acoustic guitar and learn a few basic chords and techniques, which will allow you to play simple songs and sing along with your friends. As you progress, you can learn more complex techniques and explore different musical genres—or even move on to an electric guitar!

4. Flute

The flute is a (typically) woodwind instrument that is ideal for beginners. It is very easy to play, and you can learn simple melodies in a short amount of time. It is an excellent first instrument for both children and adults who want to explore music without a major investment of time or money. Furthermore, learning to play the flute can serve as a stepping stone toward learning more complex musical instruments, such as the transverse flute or the clarinet.

5. Piano

You might be asking yourself: “Excuse me? Is the piano easy to play?” The truth is, what we mentioned at the beginning also applies here: it’s easy to start, but difficult to master. As a beginner—with the help of a basic guidebook, a teacher, or even online instructional videos—you can quickly learn to read sheet music and play simple songs.

The piano allows you to play melodies and chords simultaneously, providing a more comprehensive understanding of music theory. Furthermore, an electric piano or keyboard can be quite affordable compared to a traditional piano, as well as easier to transport, offering an accessible entry point into the world of music.

Learning a musical instrument requires patience, dedication, and consistent practice. Therefore, start with an instrument that inspires you, and keep in mind the time and budget you have available. As you progress, you will discover other instruments and musical genres that interest you. A whole new world opens up before you!

Your first step in Spain

Check out schools, associations, and cultural centers in your local area. Ask if you can attend a trial session, and confirm the language, skill level, schedule, and any required equipment. If you are planning to attend a performance or a gathering, check the current schedule and the associated terms and conditions. When starting a new hobby, it is often more helpful to find an activity you can repeat regularly, rather than buying equipment or committing to a long-term course right from the start.
