Plus, keep in mind that scented candles make a wonderful gift for any occasion—sure to delight anyone who receives them.

How to make a handmade candle in a glass jar

Here is some important information about the types of candles you can make:

Candles fall into four main categories based on the material used:

  • Paraffin candles:

Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum refining. These are perhaps the most common and affordable type of candle.

  • Soy candles:

Soy candles are made from natural soy wax; they are eco-friendly, have a clean appearance, and last longer than paraffin candles.

  • Beeswax candles:

These are made from natural beeswax and have a characteristic sweet scent.

  • Palm oil candles:

They absorb a higher percentage of fragrance and release it evenly as they burn.

Now that we have a better understanding of the materials used to make candles, let’s get to work! Make sure you have everything you need to start making your own candles.

The basic materials you will need for your scented candles are as follows:

  • Wax of your choice
  • Essential oils or fragrance oils
  • Candle wicks
  • Candle containers or molds
  • Candle dye (optional)
  • Liquid thermometer
  • Heat-resistant container or saucepan
  • Wick holder

In addition to the materials mentioned, you will need a few tools that will make the candle-making process much easier:

  • Mixing spoon
  • Scissors
  • Small wick stickers

Before you begin, ensure that the containers you intend to use are clean and dry. Below, you will find step-by-step instructions for easily creating your own scented candles.

  1. Place a wick in each container. Secure it to the bottom of the container using one of the special stickers.
  2. Cut the wax into small pieces so that it melts more easily and quickly.
  3. Next, melt the wax using a double boiler (placed over a pot of gently simmering water).
  4. Use a thermometer and follow the temperatures for melting, adding fragrance, and pouring as specified by the manufacturer of the wax and other materials. There is no single temperature that applies to all types of wax. Avoid overheating, and never leave the process unattended.

At this stage, you have finished melting the wax and are ready to move on to the most fun and creative part of the crafting process.

  1. Allow the wax to cool slightly, to approximately 60–65°C.
  2. Add the essential oil of your choice. 10 drops per 100 grams of wax is plenty!
  3. At this point, you can also add your preferred wax dye or colorant.

Your wax is now ready to be used however you like. Place it into a container or jar, or pour it into a mold. You can easily find molds in stores or online. There are thousands of designs to choose from, but it is best to start with something simple, such as a jar or a square mold.

  1. Pour the wax into the container or mold, making sure the wick stays centered so that it burns correctly.
  2. Let the candle cool. This may take several hours, or even a full day! If you used a mold, do not rush to remove it.
  3. Once the candle has fully cured, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the appropriate wick length and type. Use containers suitable for candles and check the compatibility of the materials; not every decorative container is heat-safe.

Your candle is ready to use! Decorate your room with it or give it as a gift to your loved ones.

To help you feel more confident while making your candle, here are some useful tips to keep in mind.

  • Make sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Essential oils can cause discomfort if there is insufficient ventilation.
  • We recommend starting with soy wax, as it is very easy for beginners to use and is also eco-friendly.
  • Be sure to store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Ensure that the wick is the right size for the candle you want to make. A larger candle requires a larger wick. A wick that is too small will not burn properly, while one that is too large will cause overheating.
  • Pour the melted wax into the container or mold slowly and steadily to prevent air bubbles from forming.
