If you are looking for a fun and educational activity to do with your children, building birdhouses is an ideal choice. It is not only a creative endeavor but also an opportunity for children to connect with nature, develop new skills, and experience the joy of giving.

But why should you build birdhouses?

Building a birdhouse together is not only an enjoyable activity, but it also offers many benefits for children:

  1. Learning by doing: Children learn best when they are actively involved in an activity. By building birdhouses, children become familiar with basic concepts such as geometry, the use of tools, and the recycling of materials. They have the opportunity to see how things work in practice, which helps them develop their critical thinking skills.
  2. Skill development: While building, children develop fine motor skills and learn to cooperate and follow instructions. They also cultivate patience and learn how to solve problems.
  3. Fostering creativity: Giving children the freedom to choose the design and decorate their birdhouse encourages their creativity. You can let them paint the birdhouse in their preferred colors or add decorative elements.
  4. Connection with nature: Nowadays, it is more important than ever for children to have contact with the natural environment. Through this activity, they will learn about the birds that live around them and understand the value of protecting wildlife.

How can children participate?

The most important part of this process is the active participation of the children. Here are some ideas on how they can contribute:

  • Design and planning: Sit down together and design the birdhouse. What shape will it have? What size is appropriate for the birds in your area? Children can draw their ideas on paper and decide on the final design.
  • Gathering materials: Children can help collect materials, such as wood, old boxes, or recyclable items. If the materials are already on hand, let them take part in preparing them—for example, by sanding the wood until it is smooth.
  • Construction: Under your supervision, they can help build the house. Even the simplest tasks, such as holding tools or driving in small nails, are important for helping them feel involved.
  • Decoration: This is where children can let their imaginations run wild! Paint the little house together, add decorations, and make it unique.
  • Placement: Once the little house is ready, find the best spot in the garden or on the balcony to place it. The children will be excited to see birds visit!

And now, here are some helpful tips for creating the best possible home for your feathered friends:

1. Choosing Materials

  • Use natural materials: Opt for spruce, pine, or cypress wood, as these are durable and safe for birds. Avoid plywood or chemically treated wood, as these can be harmful.
  • Avoid using metal materials: Metal can get very hot in the sun, causing discomfort or even injury to the birds.

2. Design and Dimensions

  • Entrance size: The diameter of the entrance should be appropriate for the type of bird you wish to attract. For example, for sparrows, the diameter should be about 4 centimeters, while for blackbirds, it can be slightly larger.
  • Depth of the little house: The depth should be sufficient for the birds to feel secure. A depth of 15–20 cm is ideal for most small birds.
  • Ventilation and drainage: Ensure there are small holes in the base for water drainage, and ventilation holes near the roof for better air circulation.

3. Construction

  • Use non-toxic glues and paints: If you decide to glue or paint the birdhouse, make sure the materials are safe for birds.
  • Safety: Ensure that there are no sharp edges or protruding spikes to prevent injuries.

4. Decoration

  • Natural colors: If you wish to paint the birdhouse, choose colors that blend in with the surroundings, such as earth tones. Bright colors may scare birds away.
  • Avoid excessive decoration: Keep the birdhouse simple and cozy, without excessive decorative elements that might distract the birds.

5. Location

  • Height: Place the birdhouse at a height of 2 to 3 meters above the ground to protect it from predators.
  • Orientation: Face the entrance toward the east or south to avoid strong winds and rain.
  • Shaded location: Place the birdhouse in a spot that does not receive direct sunlight all day long to prevent it from overheating.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Clean the birdhouse after the breeding season to remove old nests and insects. This will encourage birds to return the following season.
  • Annual inspection: Check the birdhouse every year for any damage and carry out necessary repairs.

Once finished, you will realize that you have created much more than just a simple shelter for birds. You will have created memories, strengthened the bond with your children, and taught them valuable lessons. And, of course, you will have provided a safe and welcoming home for the birds in your neighborhood.

Build a birdhouse with your children and give them the chance to discover the joy of creating and giving. It will be an experience they will remember for years to come!

Your first step in Spain

Look for an introductory session at workshops or cultural centers in your local area. Compare the techniques being taught, the materials provided, the group size, and whether you will be able to complete the project during the class. If you want to practice at home, start with a small project and buy only the materials you need; always check the manufacturer’s instructions, and ensure proper ventilation and safety gear for each product.
