You don’t need to pack your weekend with tickets and reservations to discover a city.

1. A neighborhood photo walk

Choose a theme before you head out—such as doors, shadows, shop windows, or architectural details. Walk around without trying to cover too much ground, and finish by selecting five photos. Please respect people’s privacy and be mindful of spaces where photography is not permitted.

2. Observing and sketching in a park

A notebook and a pencil are all you need to practice. Find a suitable, comfortable spot, draw a tree or a simple composition, and try viewing it from a different angle. Check the park’s rules and closing times before you go; access to certain facilities or activities within the grounds may be subject to specific conditions.

3. Check library programming

Look for reading sessions, clubs, or meetups at your nearest municipal library. You may need to register to attend, even if the event is free. Check the language of the activity, the recommended age range, and whether you need to bring any materials.

4. Choose an exhibition with up-to-date information

The official Madrid tourism website is a great resource for discovering cultural offerings. Always confirm ticket prices and booking requirements on the venue’s own website; policies can vary between different galleries or temporary exhibitions.

5. Plan a museum visit

Check the entry requirements on the website of the Prado—or whichever museum you’d like to visit. If free admission is available, verify what it covers and whether a reservation or capacity limit applies. A reduced-price ticket is not the same as free admission.

6. Create an “everyday architecture” walking route

Choose a few nearby squares or streets and observe the materials, balconies, or signage. You can document your route with notes and look up the history of specific buildings later. Keep your itinerary simple so that transportation and food costs don’t turn your outing into an unexpected expense.

How to keep your budget under control

Decide in advance how much you want to spend, and set aside separate amounts for admission tickets, transportation, and optional extras like food or drinks. If you’re going as a group, discuss these expectations before you meet up. The best budget-friendly plan is one that allows everyone to participate without any pressure.
