Let’s be honest: butterflies and bees are the true stars of the natural world! They are responsible for pollinating plants, which leads to more fruit, more vegetables, and, of course, more life in our gardens. Unfortunately, the unchecked use of pesticides, the loss of natural habitats, and climate change have caused a drastic decline in their populations.

But don’t worry! With a little effort, you can turn your garden, balcony, or even a small corner of your yard into a paradise for these wonderful insects.

How to create the perfect sanctuary for pollinators

1. Choose the right plants

Butterflies and bees love flowers that are rich in nectar and pollen. Consider plants such as:

  • Lavender – A huge hit with bees!
  • Rosemary – Beautiful, fragrant, and full of pollen.
  • Thyme – For even the most discerning bees!
  • Sunflowers – Impressive and nutritious.
  • Violas and Daisies – Ideal for butterflies.

Tip: Plant flowers that bloom all year round to ensure a constant food supply.

2. Avoid pesticides

Chemical pesticides can be deadly to bees and butterflies. Opt for organic plant protection methods, such as:

  • Homemade insect repellents made with garlic and soap.
  • Planting aromatic plants that repel pests (for example, basil, mint).
  • Introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs.

3. Add a water source

Just like us, pollinators need water too! Create a small watering station:

  • Get a shallow container.
  • Add small stones or twigs so they can land and drink safely.
  • Change the water frequently to keep it clean.

4. Tips for building a small insect hotel

Solitary bees and butterflies need safe places to rest and lay their eggs. Build a homemade shelter:

  • Use wooden boxes or bamboo tubes.
  • Place them 1–2 meters above the ground.
  • Choose a sunny spot that is also protected from strong winds.

5. Leave a corner of your garden in its natural state

Bees and butterflies love natural, uncultivated areas. A patch of land with wildflowers or a pile of firewood can become the perfect refuge.

The result? A garden full of life!

With these small changes, you will see your garden transformed into a vibrant, colorful paradise, filled with fluttering butterflies and buzzing bees. The best part? You’ll be contributing to the protection of biodiversity while enjoying a healthier, more productive garden.
