Let’s be honest. Most of us go to the beach and follow more or less the same routine: a dip in the water, some time in the sun, a coffee, another dip, and then… back to the sun lounger.

But what if we told you that, just a few meters from the shore, there’s an entirely different world that you’ve likely never discovered?

With a mask and a snorkel, you can observe marine life up close, discover rock formations, and experience a different side of the sea—one that often goes unnoticed.

Welcome to the world of snorkeling!

And the best part? You don’t need to be a diver, an athlete, or an extreme sports enthusiast to discover it.

What exactly is snorkeling?

Snorkeling involves exploring the seabed while floating on the water’s surface, using a mask and a snorkel. In other words, you swim along calmly, observing what’s happening underwater without having to constantly hold your breath.

It sounds simple—and it is. But the experience it offers is far greater than you might expect.

Unlike scuba diving, you don’t need to go to great depths or obtain any certification. This makes snorkeling ideal for beginners, families, and anyone looking to try a new activity while on vacation.

Why is it worth trying?

Snorkeling allows you to see the sea from an entirely different perspective. Where you once saw only the water’s surface, you suddenly discover a small, vibrant underwater world.

Depending on the location, you might encounter small fish, seashells, sea urchins, marine plants, and striking rock formations. Even at a fairly ordinary beach, the underwater landscape can be surprisingly fascinating.

At the same time, snorkeling is a relaxing experience. Your movements are slow, your focus is entirely on your surroundings, and—for a while—you can disconnect from your phone, your daily routine, and the frantic pace of everyday life.

What equipment do you need?

One of the greatest advantages of snorkeling is that it doesn’t require much equipment. To get started, you only need:

  • a mask that fits your face well,
  • a snorkel,
  • and optionally, a pair of fins to help you move through the water more easily.

Choosing a good mask is especially important. If the mask doesn’t fit well, water can get in, making the experience less enjoyable.

Is it difficult for a beginner?

Not at all. Most people get the hang of it in just a few minutes.

At first, breathing only through your mouth via the snorkel might feel a bit strange. However, after a few tries, it becomes completely natural.

It’s a good idea to have your first experience in calm, relatively shallow water. This way, you can get used to the equipment and enjoy the experience without any stress.

Some helpful tips for your first time

To get the most out of the experience, keep a few simple tips in mind:

  • Don’t rush; take your time getting used to the mask and the snorkel.
  • Choose a day without strong waves.
  • Start in shallow, clear water.
  • Move slowly and observe your surroundings.
  • Avoid touching plants, sea urchins, or other marine life.

Snorkeling is not about speed or performance. The more slowly you move, the more details you will be able to observe.

Why might snorkeling become your new favorite summer pastime?

Perhaps because it combines several things at once. It is a form of gentle exercise, a bit of exploration, and, at the same time, an opportunity to connect more deeply with nature. It requires no special skills, is inexpensive, and can be enjoyed at almost any beach with clear water.

The next time you find yourself by the sea—instead of just swimming or sunbathing on a lounge chair—put on a mask and a snorkel. There is an entire world just a few centimeters below the water’s surface, and this summer might be the perfect opportunity to discover it!

Your first step in Spain

Look for a beginner-level activity near you and ask about what it entails before booking. Confirm details regarding equipment, requirements, insurance, and the policy for bad weather. For outdoor activities, check the specific advisories and restrictions for that location—conditions vary between the coast, inland areas, and the islands. Choose an activity based on your own level of preparation and the guidance of professionals, rather than relying solely on a photograph or a difficulty label.
