Whether you are a cycling enthusiast or have simply decided to start riding your new bike, there are a few basic points to keep in mind to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Here are 7 important things to keep in mind when cycling:

Use the right equipment

Whether you are a professional or a beginner, a helmet is essential. A good helmet can save your life in the event of a fall. Choose a helmet that fits you well and is certified. There are different styles, such as lightweight helmets for road cycling or more robust ones for mountain biking. Don’t forget to adjust it properly before you start!

Additionally, wear comfortable clothing and appropriate cycling footwear. If you are going on long rides, cycling gloves will protect your hands from vibrations and provide a better grip. They can also absorb some of the impact in the event of a fall, reducing the risk of injury.

Check your bike before every ride

It is important to perform a quick check before heading out. Start by checking the tire pressure. They should be inflated correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Tires with low pressure can reduce your bike’s performance and safety, and are more prone to punctures. Also, check for any breaks or damage that might require repair or replacement.

Brakes are the most important component for your safety. Check that the brake pads have sufficient thickness and are functioning correctly. Engage the brake lever and ensure that the brakes grip well and that there is no slack. Test the brakes at a low speed before you start cycling.

Check the chain to ensure it is clean and well-lubricated. A rusty chain can cause pedaling issues and lead to gear wear. Additionally, verify that the gears and pedals are functioning correctly and are free of defects.

Ensure that the handlebars are properly adjusted and not loose. Finally, conduct a general inspection of your bicycle’s components, such as lights, reflectors, and mounts for panniers or baskets. Confirm that everything is securely attached and working as it should.

If you identify any issues, fix them before heading out on the road so as not to compromise your safety.

Follow traffic rules

Just like motorists, you must obey traffic signs and signals. Signs such as STOP signs, traffic lights, and right-of-way indicators apply to cyclists as well. Stop when required and follow all traffic signals to stay safe on the road. If you are riding on busy roads, exercise extra caution and remain aware of your surroundings.

When you intend to turn or change lanes, use clear hand signals. This alerts other road users to your intentions and reduces the risk of accidents. Always use designated bike lanes whenever they are available.

Never forget that a poor assessment of a situation can put both you and other road users at risk.

Use reflectors and lights

If you are cycling in low-light conditions or at night, visibility is crucial. Use reflectors and lights so that other road users can see you. Furthermore, if you are riding on a road without adequate lighting, a bicycle headlight can make all the difference.

Equip your bicycle with front and rear lights. The front light should be powerful enough to illuminate the road, while the rear light should be bright and reflective so that drivers approaching from behind can see you. LED lights are generally the best option, as they offer high brightness and long battery life.

Invest in reflective stickers or tape for your bicycle. Place them in strategic locations, such as on the wheels, the sides, and the handlebars. Clothing with reflective elements or fabrics is ideal for cycling at night. Choose vests, arm sleeves, or belts with reflective features that make you more visible to others, even in the dark or in conditions with poor visibility. Before you start pedaling, ensure that your lights are working correctly and that the batteries are fully charged.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated

Regardless of the distance or intensity of your ride, hydration is important. Carry a water bottle and drink regularly, especially if the ride is long or the weather is hot. Do not wait until you are very thirsty to drink water. It is best to drink small amounts of water regularly throughout your ride. This helps prevent dehydration and ensures that your body remains properly hydrated at all times.

Stay in good physical condition

Cycling is a demanding activity, so make sure you are in good physical condition. Exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, and stretch before and after cycling to prevent injuries.

By following these simple yet important recommendations, you will enjoy your bike ride more and stay safer. Whether you are pedaling through the city or exploring the countryside, the most important thing is to enjoy the experience and stay safe. Have a great ride!

Your first step in Spain

Look for a beginner-level activity near home and explain your experience level before booking. Confirm details regarding equipment, requirements, insurance, and the policy for bad weather. For outdoor activities, check the specific advisories and restrictions for the location—conditions vary between the coast, the interior, and the islands. Choose an activity based on your own preparation and the guidance of professionals, rather than relying solely on a photograph or a difficulty label.
