Paddling changes the way you look at a landscape. From the water, a shoreline, a bridge, or a forest takes on a whole new appearance. To get off to a good start, distinguish between a calm kayaking excursion and a whitewater descent, and choose an activity that matches your experience level.

The Sella as a reference point

The official Spanish tourism portal presents the descent of the Sella River in Asturias as a canoeing and kayaking activity with organized routes. Specific departure points, distances, conditions, and requirements must be confirmed with your chosen provider; a tourism listing does not guarantee that an activity is suitable for you.

Calm waters and whitewater are distinct experiences

An outing in a sheltered environment is a good way to get to know your craft and practice following a guide’s instructions. A river with a current presents additional challenges. Do not choose a route based solely on its duration or an “adventure” label; ask for an explanation of the difficulty level, the conditions, and the prior experience required.

Along the coast, factors such as wind, swell, and boat traffic also come into play. The fact that the water looks calm from the shore is not enough of a reason to head out.

Questions to ask the organizer

Confirm whether the activity includes a guide, a suitable life jacket, equipment, and insurance. Ask about requirements for minors, participation criteria, and the arrangements for pickup at the end of the trip. Disclose any personal limitations that might affect the activity before booking.

Ask what happens if the weather or water flow changes. A clear cancellation policy and a comprehensive safety briefing are essential parts of the experience.

Pack a practical backpack

Bring only what the center recommends, and keep essential items in waterproof storage. Having a change of clothes for afterward is useful. Avoid carrying loose items that could be lost, and do not assume you will have mobile phone coverage throughout the entire route.

Do not collect plants, do not approach wildlife, and stick to designated access points. Navigation rules and permits can vary between different river basins and protected areas; the organizer should clarify which regulations apply to your specific outing.

Your first experience: take your time

Start with a guided introductory activity and allow for some flexibility in your schedule. The goal is not to cover the longest distance, but rather to get familiar with the equipment, follow instructions, and discover whether you enjoy paddling.
