If you’re interested in experimenting with scents, you can explore various ingredients and techniques to create your own homemade versions. “Natural” doesn’t necessarily mean “harmless”—plants and essential oils also contain chemical substances and can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Always check the usage guidelines, and avoid making anything if you aren’t sure whether it’s safe for the people or pets in your home.
- Herbs: Lavender, mint, rosemary, sage, thyme… any of them! Choose your favorite scent.
- Essential oils: If you want to enhance the natural feel, you can add essential oils from your favorite herbs—or even orange, lemon, or eucalyptus—for extra freshness.
- Spray: If you prefer liquid deodorizers, get a small spray bottle (or an atomizer).
- Baking soda or cornstarch: These natural substances absorb odors and help diffuse scents throughout your space.
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Choose the herbs you like best
Start with your favorite herbs. Lavender is ideal for relaxing and creating a calm atmosphere at home. Mint provides a fresh touch, while rosemary is perfect for both cleansing and fragrance. Cut some fresh leaves or use dried ones.
2. Prepare your aromatic infusion
Place the herbs in a container and cover them with boiling water. Let them steep for 10 to 15 minutes so they can release all their wonderful aromas into the water. If you want a more intense scent, add more herbs!
3. Add essential oils (optional)
If you want a stronger scent or want to tailor it to your mood, add a few drops of essential oils. A few drops of lavender or lemon will make all the difference.
4. Use baking soda or cornstarch
To help diffuse the scents, add a little baking soda or cornstarch. These substances can absorb odors and help the fragrance linger in your space for longer. Essentially, they “trap” the scents and release them gradually.
5. Strain and pour into a spray bottle.
After 15–20 minutes, strain out the herbs and pour the liquid into a spray bottle. Now you have your very own natural air freshener! You can use it in any room to add freshness and fragrance.
6. On shelves, on sofas—everywhere!
Spray the air freshener on curtains, shelves, cushions, or even into the air to create the perfect atmosphere. It’s ideal for eliminating unpleasant odors and giving your home a fresh, natural feel.
Helpful tips:
- Mix your herbs: Don’t limit yourself to just one type of herb. Combine lavender and rosemary, or mint and sage, for a perfect spring blend.
- Use dried herbs: If you don’t have access to fresh herbs, dried ones work wonderfully!
- Refill the spray: With use, the scent will gradually fade. If you’d like a stronger aroma, simply add a bit more essential oil or fresh herbs.
We do not describe these preparations as “chemical-free” or as safe for every type of use. Avoid spraying on people, animals, or delicate surfaces, and do not ingest these preparations. Do not use any ingredient if you have a known sensitivity or any concerns regarding its safety; consult product instructions and seek professional guidance when appropriate.
Your first step in Spain
Look for an introductory session at workshops or cultural centers in your municipality. Compare the techniques being taught, the materials included, the group size, and whether you will be able to complete your piece during the class. If you plan to practice at home, start with a small project and purchase only the materials you need; always check the manufacturer’s instructions, as well as the proper ventilation and safety equipment required for each product.
